The decree is signed, now what? The months after a divorce are full of small practical resets. Working through them steadily gives you a clean foundation for what's next.
Update your documents and accounts
Change your name on your accounts if you're reverting it, update beneficiaries on life insurance and retirement accounts, revise your will, and separate any joint accounts. These are easy to forget and important to get right.
Rebuild your financial base
You're now budgeting as one household. Set up your own accounts, rework your budget around a single income, and check your credit report to make sure joint debts are handled as your agreement requires. Follow through on any property transfers from the decree.
Tend to yourself and your kids
Divorce is a loss, even a welcome one. Give yourself permission to grieve, lean on people you trust, and consider talking to a counselor. If you have children, keep their routines steady, predictability is what helps them feel safe.
You don't have to do it all at once. Knock out one item at a time, and keep several certified copies of your decree handy, you'll need them for many of these steps.
