How Much Does a Divorce Cost?
From DIY to a full courtroom battle, divorce costs vary wildly. Here's what actually drives the price and how to keep it low.
Divorce costs range from a couple hundred dollars to well over $11,000. The difference isn't luck, it's a few specific factors you largely control.
The biggest factor: contested vs. uncontested
A contested divorce, where lawyers or a judge resolve disputes, is what produces the eye-watering averages. An uncontested divorce, where you agree on the terms, cuts out almost all of that cost.
The pieces of the bill
There are really three: preparing your documents (a flat fee with a service like ours, or hourly with a lawyer), the court's filing fee (commonly $100–$450, paid to the court), and any extras like a mediator if you need help agreeing.
How to keep it low
Agree on as much as you can with your spouse before involving anyone else. Use a flat-fee service instead of hourly billing. And ask your court about a fee waiver if the filing fee is a hardship.
For most amicable couples, the realistic all-in cost is a flat document fee plus the court filing fee, a fraction of the lawyer-driven average.
