50/50 custody means children split their time roughly equally between both parents. It's increasingly common, and with a workable schedule it can give kids strong relationships with both parents.
What 50/50 actually means
It refers to physical custody, where the children sleep, being divided about equally. It doesn't have to be exactly half; it means neither parent is the clear 'primary' home. Parents often still share legal custody (the big decisions) on top of this.
Common schedules
Popular options include week-on/week-off (simple, fewer exchanges, better for older kids), the 2-2-3 rotation (frequent contact, good for younger children), and 3-4-4-3. The best one depends on your children's ages, the distance between homes, and your work schedules.
What makes it succeed
Equal time works best when parents live reasonably close, communicate civilly, and keep routines consistent across both homes. It asks more coordination of the adults, but for kids, the payoff is not losing a parent to a every-other-weekend schedule.
If you and your co-parent agree on a 50/50 plan, write the exact schedule into your parenting plan and the court will almost always approve it.
